Pumps and Filters
Pumps
The pool pump is essentially the heart of the swimming pool's circulation system. Your pool's circulation system comprises the elements of your pool that takes water from the pool, filters it, sanitises it, and returns the water back to the pool. If your pool pump is not running, the water from your pool is not being properly circulated or filtered.
It's important to size your pool pump correctly. This will ensure your pool runs optimally, resulting in fewer problems, easier maintenance, lower energy costs and longer equipment life.
As a general rule of thumb, the larger your pool, the larger the pump you need, and the more it will cost to run.
The equipment you install on your pool will also have a major influence on the size of pump you require. Pool cleaners, solar heating and water features all require more energy and power than is required to simply pump water through the filtration system.
The major choice you have as a pool owner when selecting pool pumps, is whether or not to buy a fixed speed or multi-speed (variable speed) pool pump.
Filters
If your pump is the heart of the circulation and filter system, then the pool filter is the lungs. The primary purpose of the pool filter is to keep your pool clean by removing undissolved debris from the pool water.
There are essentially two common types of filters sold - sand and cartridge. Both have their benefits, so it really comes down to personal choice and preference.
Sand filters strain the water from the surface of your skimmer box, filtering out impurities. These impurities eventually clog up the sand, which should be cleared on a regular basis by completing a backwashing. Backwashing is greatly reduced if the sand is replaced with glass media.
Cartridge filters use less water and filter finer particles than sand filters. Cartridge filters also require less water flow and less energy to effectively filter your pool water.
Ideal for tight spaces, they are simple to operate and maintain.
Single Speed Pumps
We provide pool pumps for all pools sizes. We'll ensure your pump and filter matches your pool's requirement. It's important the pool pump is correctly matched to your pool filter.
We use Hayward Super II and Zodiac FloPro pumps. We can also source direct replacements of the original equipment to save on re-plumbing work.
Hayward Super II Pumps
The reliable Super II pool pump is perfect for new builds and aftermarket application, offering high performance capabilities as an upgrade path for medium head pumps. Features on the Super II pumps ensure increased durability, flow dynamics control and quieter running capability.
Zodiac FloPro Pumps
The FloPro Series is a quiet, high-performance single speed pool pump that uses a durable motor ensuring consistent performance and reliability. The FloPro pumps are made from quality materials, features to increase ease of use and are backed by a three-year warranty.
Variable Speed Pumps
Variable speed pumps are able to be adjusted (manually or automatically) to run at different speeds depending on what function they're performing. For instance, they would be set to run at the lowest possible speed when filtering water, at a mid-range speed when operating the pool cleaner, and at maximum speed when activating the water feature or solar heater.
Variable speed pumps can be up to 90% cheaper to run than single-speed pumps.
Hayward TriStar VS
The first 10-star energy rated pump in Australia, the TriStar® VS is the most efficient pool pump available at any speed.
Instead of running continuously at maximum power, the TriStar®VS pump efficiently regulates its flow according to the pool’s requirements at any given time, giving pool owners significant savings on swimming pool running costs.
Zodiac FloPro 1.5HP VS
An intelligent, easy to install variable speed pool pump with a nine-star energy rating.
The New Zodiac FloPro VS1.5HP poop pump is the ultimate in design, performance and robustness.
Sand Filters
Sand filters are still the most commonly used pool filters in New Zealand. Robust, durable and low maintenance, sand filters can also be filled with different filtration media, such as sand or glass.
Sand filters strain the water from the surface of your skimmer box, filtering out impurities.

Hayward Pro Series Sand Filters
Hayward Pro Series sand filters deliver crystal clear water through advanced pool filter technology for pools of all types and sizes. Pro Series sand filters require minimum care and offer smooth, efficient flow and totally balance backwashing. The filters are moulded with corrosion-proof, self-cleaning polymeric materials. A versatile seven-position control valve offers both easy operation and maximum efficiency.
The Hayward Pro Series offers reliability, durability, easy plumbing and accessible servicing.
Zodiac Titan Series Fibreglass Sand Pool Filters
The Zodiac Titan Series Fibreglass sand pool filters offer a highly efficient and robust design that makes them suitable for small to large residential pools.
Durable construction means the filter will last longer. Its features promote easy operation and inspection, and it comes with a 10-year tank warranty.
Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters use less water and filter finer particles than sand filters. Cartridge filters also require less water flow and less energy to effectively filter your pool water.
Ideal for tight spaces, they are simple to operate and maintain, and only need to be cleaned once or twice a season. Simply hose down the element when required. Save hundreds of litres of water per year compared to backwashing a sand filter (on average you are using 750 litres of water per backwash with a sand filter).
Zodiac Cartridge Pool Filter
This premium range of filters is available as a single cartridge system (CS range) or as a large multi-element cluster cartridge (CV range). Constructed from a durable, impact resistant, anti-corrosive, UV resistant body, this range is built to last and is super easy to keep clean and running efficiently.
The Zodiac CV range is suitable for most backyard pools up to 100K litres. It's easy to install and clean and features an easy-to-read pressure gauge. These filters are backed by a five-year tank warranty.
Pool Filter Media
For pool filters. The Pool Doctor recommends:
- Activated Filter Media by Dryden Aqua
- Zodiac Crystal Clear
Activated Filter Media by Dryden Aqua
Never change your pool filter media again!
Activated Filter Media (AFM) is a direct replacement for sand or glass, doubling the performance of sand filters without the need of additional investments in infrastructure. AFM® resists bio-fouling, bio-coagulation and transient wormhole channeling of unfiltered water and never needs to be recharged or replaced.
AFM® is a highly engineered pool product manufactured from a specific glass type, processed to obtain the optimum particle size and shape. It is then exposed to a three-step activation process to increase its surface area by up to 300 times for superior mechanical and electrostatic filtration performance.
AFM® never needs replacing or recharging, it's self-sterilising, maintains a high performance standard, lowers chlorine oxidation demand and filters 30% more organic contaminants than quartz and sand.
Zodiac Crystal Clear
Zodiac crystals are a type of pool filtration media that can be used as a direct replacement for sand or zeolite. It has environmental and sanitary benefits over traditional sand media.
Benefits include an increase in filtration efficiency, water saving, and a decrease in chlorine demand.
Bioguard Filter Brite can be used to chemically clean the media and bring its efficiency back to that of new media.
